Helping your mates

If you have a friend who is being abused in a relationship:
  • Don’t put yourself in danger
  • Understand why it might be hard for your friend to end the relationship
  • Listen but don’t judge
  • Let them know about help lines or places they can go for support.
Why is it difficult to end an abusive relationship?

Usually it is difficult to end a relationship, even when things haven’t been right for a long time.

Think about how hard it has been in the past for you to end it:

  • Don’t want to hurt them
  • Still have feelings for them
  • You have had good times together
  • You share friends
  • You owe each other money, share belongings, maybe lived together
  • Might have had a baby together
  • Don’t know how to end it.
