Keeping safe when your partner is abusive

If you are in an abusive relationship with another person it can be difficult to keep safe. There are things that you can do to stay safer:

1)   Keep your mobile charged at all times so you can ring the police or emergency services if you need to.

2)  Put credit on your phone so you can contact services that can help support you.  If you put services in your mobile phone and you're worried that your phone may be looked at, give them a different name.

3) Find a friend or family member that you can go to if you are in danger.  You can make a codeword with them if you are being overheard on the phone.  This could mean that the friend will know to contact the police if you say a certain word or phrase.

4) Talk to friends and family about what is happening to you - they might be able to help you think of ideas to stay safe in dangerous situations.  They might be able pick you up from college for example if your partner is trying to meet you there and you don’t want them to.  They may be able to go with you if you meet a support worker from an organisation.
