Mobile phone safety

Mobile phones are great for many reasons.  However, because you are always contactable, it is possible for people to constantly monitor and control what you're doing.

If your boyfriend/girlfriend continually wants to keep track of you by constantly calling or texting, this could mean you are in an unhealthy relationship.  If this is already happening, or if you want to prevent it happening, the following tips could come in handy.

  • It is always okay to turn off your phone, just as long as people you trust know where and how to contact you.
  • Do not answer if the caller is unknown.  Your abuser could always be calling you from another line.
  • If someone sends you a harassing, abusive or inappropriate text, do not respond.  Responding may encourage the person to continue, and you could end up in trouble.
  • See if your phone provider will allow you to block certain numbers.  It should tell you on their website.
  • Never contact your abuser if you have come out of a dangerous relationship.
  • In some cases, changing your phone number may be the only way to stop harassing/abusive texts or calls.
