What is self-esteem?

Self-esteem comes from a Latin word that means to estimate.

So...how much self-esteem you have depends on how you ‘estimate' yourself. You come up with this ‘estimation' by comparing different parts of your life with other people. If you think you match up your self-esteem is high, but, if you don't think you are good enough your self-esteem is low.

Good self-esteem is really important as it can shape how you live your life.

Relationships are more likely to last and be healthy if you feel good about yourself first.

Sometimes when you have low self-esteem you might feel that you need to have a boyfriend or a girlfriend to make you happy, If you start a relationship when you feel like this you might rely too heavily on your girlfriend or boyfriend, have unrealistic expectations of the relationship and not be as happy as you thought you would be.

Being comfortable with who you are before you begin a relationship can have a positive impact on the relationship.

It is important that you love yourself, that you know your self-worth and know that you deserve to be happy.

Improving self esteem

Below are some things that you can try to improve your self-esteem, you just need to believe that you can do them and give them a go...

  • Do things that make you feel good, such as spending time with friends, enjoy an interest or hobby
  • Eat healthily
  • Do something you have always wanted to do, but have never got around to
  • Do something you didn't think you'd be able to do, completing it will give you a great sense of achievement
  • Exercise
  • Sleep well
  • Think about what you deserve from a relationship Have a go at The Pledge
  • Make a list of the things you are good at and try to do one thing each day.  Have a go at the ‘What are you good at?' activity.

Understand that everyone is an individual with different strengths. Celebrate your own strengths rather than wish you had someone elses!
